Our tour guide will welcome you at your hotel then start the walking tour to discover Hanoi’s Old Quarter which is famous with “36 guild streets” in the past time.
Nowaday, the villages were turned to streets and many of them didn’t feature the business as it names anymore. But it’s worth your time to wander along the old streets and you surely gain many exciting experience. Despite the damages that Vietnam War left in Hanoi, the Old Quarter still retained much of the original traits that interests tourists, especially those with architectural passion. These houses are neither tall buildings as people normally see in cities nor stilt houses on lines of poles, which were popular in Vietnam’s mountainous regions these days. They are also called “tubular houses” which are short and narrow but have great length.
After walking around and enjoy some local specialties (excluded), continue to Hoan Kiem Lake area where you can pay a visit Ngoc Son temple or enjoy a drink at Trang Tien Ice Cream, Thuy Ta Ice Cream or some famous café shop/restaurants nearby.
We have the walking street and “Night market” at the weekend where no vehicles are allowed, so you can enjoy walking and going shopping without being afraid of the traffic.
Tour ends around 12:00 PM (for the morning tour) or 5:00 PM (for the afternoon tour).

We booked the full day walking tour and our guide Anh met with us at the hotel that we were staying at. She showed us around the Ho Chi Minh Complex and Temple of Literature in the morning and explained why many of the culturally significant sites were the way they are, from the important meaning in color, the architectural influences, and traditions at the temples. In the afternoon we enjoyed a tour around old quarter where we were staying, she was so kind as to let us know where the food spots were even though we didn’t book a food tour! Fluent in English, our guide was openly willing to accommodate anything we wanted to do and I felt like we had a more personal experience than other tours we have been on, like friends! Hanoi free walking tours has my highest recommendation for providing a quality tour that gives you a chance to meet with the future leaders of Vietnam (the students). After the tour I knew so much more about the deep culture and tradition in Vietnam. I urge you don’t miss one of these tours when in Hanoi, it’s a great chance to meet local and see the beautiful city.

We just finished our walking tour our guide, one of the lovely tour guides. She was very friendly and had excellent English. She was able to answer all of our questions and volunteered a lot of very interesting information- not only about what we were aiming to see on our tour but she also pointed out things that were happening around us and explain them. It was about a 3 hour tour and allowed a bit of time to shop in the market. We had a great time and I would recommend this highly to anyone.

I had an enjoyable time with my guide who was able to bring me up to speed on my very limited knowledge of Vietnamese history. He was able to answer my questions with ease and pointed out things I would never have noticed like the alleyway allowing residents to cut through a block onto another street (which reminded me a lot of Lyon’s traboules). Also a great artist, Son left me with a sketch to remember the tour by. I would highly recommend doing one of these tours to orientate yourself around the dizzying streets of the old quarter!
